The Best One-Person Business Models That Exist

TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read)

  • Ghostwriter: Ghostwriting is a profession that pays well with no credit. You write as someone else. If you’re a great writer who knows how to create viral content, you can make a killing.

  • Landing Page Designer: If you can help creators and entrepreneurs convert the traffic they’re receiving into customers or email subscribers, you’re basically printing money for yourself.

  • Courses: Make a course. Online learning is booming. It’s grown over 900% since its inception, and America’s online learning industry will be worth $687 billion by 2030.

  • 1-on-1 Coaching: If you’ve ever solved a problem in your life, you can charge others, teaching them how to overcome those same problems.

Everyone wants to have a business.

No one wants the headaches that come with it.

One of the easiest ways to reduce business hardships is not to have a massive team of employees.

Solopreneurship has entered the chat.

Becoming a “solopreneur” is beyond appealing to the masses and is on the rise. Solopreneurs run a one-person show. The idea of being your own boss and making your own hours is too good to resist.

However, not all businesses are created equal. And if you go down this road, you must know you are your boss and employee. And that requires a lot of discipline and patience.

There’s no HR, which is a positive. No dress code, either. Another positive.

There’s also no one to blame other than yourself if the business fails.

To ensure you don’t fail, here are four of the best one-person business models to consider to ensure you don't fail.

Ghostwriter

What do Prince Harry, Andre Agassi, Michelle Obama, and Bob Iger all have in common?

They’ve all “written” books.

Written is in quotes because they didn’t actually write it–the books were written by a ghost.

Ghostwriting is a profession that pays well with no credit.

Ghostwriters are professional writers who meet with celebrities, athletes, and business owners and find their “voice” to write their stories for them, as them. They pretend to be the name on the cover.

These famous people don’t have the time to sit down and write a book. Some do, most don’t.

What’s cool is that it’s not limited to books. Ghostwriting happens across the internet. And the industry is booming.

Creators, influencers, and entrepreneurs need someone to write for their social media pages.

The challenge with this industry is ghostwriting is a hidden marketplace. You can’t publicize your resume on freelancing sites. Ghostwriters can’t reveal themselves, especially who they write for, or they’re out of business.

If you’re a great writer who knows how to create viral content, you can make a killing.

I know ghostwriters making $10K-$50K a month with this business model.

Landing Page Designer

People rarely visit websites any more.

Everyone is on social media, or they’re perusing through apps.

The average human attention span is 8.25 seconds. That’s less than that of a goldfish. And that statistic is mind-boggling.

Working smarter, not harder isn’t something I subscribe to often, but it works in this example.

Instead of wasting time building entire websites with multiple pages, only focus on building landing pages for people.

Internet users lose focus quickly. A landing page is one web page with one button discussing one thing. And anyone who sells anything on the internet needs one. Hint: that’s a lot of people.

Landing pages don’t need to be too fancy, either. Aesthetic is important, but it’s not the focus.

The ultimate goal of a landing page is conversion.

If you can help creators and entrepreneurs convert the traffic they’re receiving into customers or email subscribers, you’re basically printing money for yourself.

As a beginner, charge by the hour for each landing page you do.

Once you have some experience, charge for outcomes and results (billing based on how many people convert).

You don’t need to learn to code or become super “tech-savvy,” either.

Anyone can learn to build landing pages.

Courses

The internet is filled with courses.

And there’s a reason why: they work.

The creator economy is changing the model of education.

The traditional route was to graduate high school, apply, and attend a reputable university to learn a skill or trade, and–hopefully–graduating with a degree would guarantee job security.

That old education model is dissolving before our eyes.

Why would anyone go to a university to learn when they can spend a fraction of the money to learn the same skills?

Sure, for certain professions, college is a must. However, for most, it’s just not necessary anymore.

Online learning is booming. It’s grown over 900% since its inception, and America’s online learning industry will be worth $687 billion by 2030.

There are courses online for literally anything.

I’ve seen courses for fitness, personal development, marketing, photography, language learning, blogging, etc. Literally everything.

Don’t believe me?

Here’s a dog walking course.

And if you feel you’re not qualified to teach and sell a course at anything, get resourceful. Find someone who’s a master at something and build the course for them.

Charge them and get the money.

1-on-1 Coaching

1-on-1 coaching is great and isn’t going anywhere.

If you’ve ever solved a problem in your life, you can charge others, teaching them how to overcome those same problems. Example: Fitness.

I run my own coaching business, which I learned from Brandon Carter himself. He helped me grow my online fitness business, so I now earn $20K-$30K monthly.

But you can create your own coaching business for anything.

If you speak multiple languages, teach others what you know.

If you’re a pro at sales, charge for it.

If you’ve mastered productivity, show others how and take their credit card.

The challenge of this business model is you wear many “hats” at the start. You’re teaching, creating the programs, marketing, and hopping on Zoom for sales calls.

As you grow your business, you want to hire and start delegating the different tasks to employees and virtual assistants. This move will allow you to buy back your time to focus on your business's essentials and the highest money-making tasks.

The BMM Takeaway

Since its creation, the internet has been a goldmine.

And it only continues to grow and further embeds its presence within the zeitgeist.

Look at how many malls Amazon put out of business across the country. Or how many cab companies have gone under since the invention of Uber. Online business is a force of nature and a wonder of the world.

Lean into it.

There’s a popular axiom in business: “You’re either growing or dying.”

And whether you realize it or not, you are in the business of you. And if you’re currently an employee, you might have an expiration date without knowing it.

A.I. is advancing at an unparalleled rate, and a robot could replace you in a few years. What are you going to do?

Do something where you aren’t expendable. Consider becoming a solopreneur and teach others to solve problems you’ve overcome.

A robot hasn’t been fat and lost weight. But maybe you have. You can monetize that and help people overcome similar problems as you did.

That makes you very valuable in the marketplace.
